The iconic light art biennial returned in 2023 from the 16th - 19th of November.

Artists from the UK and beyond reimagined Durham’s buildings and public spaces, creating works that say something about our world.

An estimated 200,000 visitors attended the free event across four days. This year was the biggest yet with recognizable names being part of the Lumiere archive including Ai Wei Wei and Rafeal Lozano-Hemmer.

Emma saw an opportunity through the BRILLIANT scheme to not only bring new artwork to the festival but to bring a new perspective to everyone.

At the time the BRILLIANT idea was chosen Emma was using art to help discover her deaf identity and reflect on her life, particularly the coping mechanisms she's used to fit in.

With many thanks to the Artichoke team, Emma's work became a reality through the BRILLIANT scheme, becoming one of many within a catalog of 40 artworks across the city of Durham and surrounding areas.

Emma's work was also a highlight in the BSL Tour hosted by deaf artist Martin Glover, whose work "Signed Light" was a neighbor to Emma's located just a few minutes walk away in St Oswald's Church.

Also with many thanks to Astley Signs for creating the lights.
